9/13/2006 Road trip to OregonTook a road trip down to Oregon at the weekend with my friend Kelvin on our motorbikes. The trip took us town to Portland where we hooked up with Interstate 84 which took us along the Columbia River Gorge. The scenary was fantastic and apart from a few morning showers the weather held up great also. We followed 84 for an couple of hours, stopping off at a state park and also at Bonneville Dam. It was almost 5 when we hit Bonniville Dam and at 5 sharp we got an escort off the facility by security and police since they were closing up. We stopped for the night at the Town of Hood River. We headed into town after checking into a hotel and had a bite to eat. Lovely looking town that I'd like to return to when I have more time to explore.
Next morning we headed south on 35 down into Mt Hood National park. Found a nice 2 hour loop that took us down the East and South of Mt Hood and then looped back up to 84 going through some beautiful valleys with fruit orchards everywhere and great views around every corner.
When we hit 84 we headed back west and diverted onto the historic highway, apparently so named because someone dug it up many years ago and couldn't be bothered to fill it in again (lots of potholes and gravel). We stopped off at Horsetrails Falls and Multnomah Falls which were amazing.
From their we just pointed for home, stopped in Vancouver WA for lunch and then sat on I5 for a few hours. I highly recommend finding a route that bye passes the Olympia to Tacoma stretch of I5, the traffic was woeful. Arrived home at about 8.30 in the evening with an aching ass and a smile the width of the Hoover dam on my face. Great trip and great company, can't wait for the next one. Posted some of the many pics I took to the photo album. |
